When in 1974 a Brummie quartet by the name of Judas Priest enlisted the sevices of former Flying Hat Band guitarist Glenn Tipton, it was not on the strength of his old band's monicker. Nope - and anyway, Higher Powers were guiding Kenny (alias KK) Downing, Rob (then Bob) Halford and Ian Hill. How else could they have known that tucked up the sleeve of his cheese-cloth shirt Tipton had a lethal Heavy Metal arsenal that would make them into stars?
To be honest, the evidence for this is conspicuously lacking on their quirky debut LP, Rocka Rolla, that makes up the first part of this Collection. Only the four-track 'Winter Suite' hinted at what was to come. But its successor (and our second part), Sad Wings Of Destiny, damn near knocked this Earth off its axis.
Cataclysmic in its impact, this record was Heavy Metal forged seemingly in the very fires of Hell (but in reality at Rockfield and Morgan Studios) to tempered-titanium invincibility. On it, Tipton and Downing metamorphosed into a twin-lead attack keen as a razor and brutal as a sledgehammer. Their six-string assult was counterpointed perfectly by the fiendishly wicked singing (not 'sceaming', hapless copyists take heed) of Rob (then Robert) Halford. He was note-perfect, the guitars were set to KILL and Sad Wings emerged simply awesome.
Although released in 1976, it still towers like Colossus over the world of Metal. Its quieter and slower moments like 'Dreamer Deceiver' or the ballad 'Epitaph' serve only to torment the listener into ever deeper throes of aural ecstasy come the arrival of such sensitive little ditties as 'Ripper', 'Genocide' and 'Victim Of Changes'. Make no mistake, this is Heavy Metal as 'twas first written: in the Dark.
Somewhere in the true fires of Hell, this record plays loud and continuously. I pray each night that I get that room when I die...
