"After releasing two albums on the Gull Records label (Janus Records in the States), namely Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings Of Destiny, Judas Priest's hard-touring ethic and burgeoning popularity helped them scoop a deal with CBS/Columbia. With major-label muscle behind them, the big time beckoned tantalisingly. Priest's third full-length Sin After Sin was released in April 1977 and it was their heaviest, most uncompromising offering to date, helped in no small part by Simon Phillips: powerhouse contribution on drums, not to mention a dense, unyielding production job by Deep Purple's Roger Glover. Sin After Sin spawned the single 'Diamonds And Rust' backed with 'Dissident Aggressor', a cover version coupled with a Glenn Tipton/Rob Halford/K.K. Downing original (the latter's no-nonsense title set a benchmark for future Priest songs with similarly uncompromising names). 'Diamonds...', a song penned by Joan Baez, bears precious little resemblance to the original. Punctuated by pounding power chords, Halford's characterful voice is enhanced by some neat echo treatment as he grapples with Baez's inspired lyrics: "Our breath comes out white clouds, mingles and hangs in the air". The B-side meanwhile, is prime-time Priest with its awesome, chugging rhythm and ear-splitting opening scream from Rob. In pure heavy metal terms, this track set new standards. Later, in 2010, Priest would win a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for their rendition of Dissident Aggressor on A Touch Of Evil Live."

"The A-side of Judas Priest's second single for CBS/Columbia was another cover version, 'Better By You, Better Than Me'. Originally recorded by Spooky Tooth and composed by keyboard player Gary Wright, the song first appeared on the 1969 album 'Spooky Two'. It was a relatively obscure track for Priest to cover, indeed I'd wager that at the time of its release (January 1978) many fans were unaware it wasn't a band composition. Based around a memorable staccato guitar riff, the song ebbs and flows dramatically thanks to a slow 'n' moody mid-section and ending. Invader seemingly begins with the sounds of an alien spaceship and the song's lyrics tell of a planet defending itself from an alien invasion: "With vigilance by day and night/Our scanners trace the sky/A shield is sealed upon this earth/A shield you won't get by". Both songs are taken from Priest's fourth album, Sin After Sin."

"The year 1978 was a busy but productive one for Judas Priest. The band's creative juices weren't so much flowing, they were positively gushing. Not content with releasing Sin After Sin in February, they issued a further full-length album in November: Killing Machine (or Hell Bent For Leather, as it was titled in the US). This single came out in September and provided a taster for the latter album. Interestingly, although 'Evening Star' would be the third track in Killing Machine's running order (after 'Delivering The Goods' and 'Rock Forever'), 'Starbreaker' was actually lifted from Sin After Sin. Even so, both songs showcase a subtle shift in direction for Priest, and are formative examples of 'commercial heavy metal' a contradiction in terms maybe, but an approach no other band had attempted before. 'Evening Star' begins in a surprisingly understated fashion, quickly launching into the chorus: "Evening Star, I can see the light/Evening Star, guiding me so bright." Hmm is there a religious connotation here? (The song appears to describe the journey of the Magi from a first-person perspective.) 'Starbreaker', meanwhile, might have a crunching rhythm but just check out those chart-friendly handclaps in the chorus. This was the sound of Priest aiming for the singles charts while at the same time making sure they didn't alienate their hardcore fan-base. It was a delicate balance to strike, but the band were beginning to nail it."

"Released in October 1978, both of these songs were taken from the Killing Machine/Hell Bent For Leather album. 'Before The Dawn' was perhaps an odd choice for an A-side. Like the previous single's lead track, 'Evening Star', 'Before The Dawn' begins unassumingly but unlike 'Evening Star' it continues in that vein, at least until an elegiac guitar solo cuts in. Halford sings in a lower register than usual and indeed there's almost a whiff of 'Euro ballad' about the song, especially if you take notice of the unusually romantic lyrics: "Before the dawn/I hear you whisper in your sleep: Don't let the morning take him." ('Dissident Aggressor this isn't). 'Rock Forever', on the B-side, is far more Priest-like, with a grinding groove and Halford back in high-register mode on the chorus: "I'm in love, so in love, and I can't stop talking 'bout my rock forever."

"Released in January 1979, this three-tracker's original format was a 12-inch single. (The seven-inch version had just 'Starbreaker' as its B-side.) You might remember the cover to the 12-inch: a striking monochrome live photo of Rob Halford, bare-chested and with studded wristbands reaching right up to his elbows, one hand clenched around his microphone, the other balled into a fist. An enduring image and no mistake. Take On The World' was to prove Priest's big breakthrough at least in the UK, where it reached No.14 in the chart. With Halford's voice alternating between gruff and high-pitched, the song urges Priest's ardent followers to unite with the band on the road to victory: "Put yourself in our hands so our voices can be heard/And together we will take on all the world." Yeah, go get 'em! The two live tracks, meanwhile, show how Priest had refined their art and developed -better make that mutated - into an on-stage killing machine (pun most definitely intended). 'White Heat Red Hot', first heard on Stained Class, is the pick of the bunch, offering more than seven minutes of pure heavy metal delirium."

"In April 1979 'Evening Star' made its second appearance as the A-side of a Priest single, this time not on a seven-inch but on limited-edition 12-inch clear vinyl. The backing card (which could be glimpsed through the transparent record) depicted the band members in moody, menacing poses with Halford in the centre, clad head-to-toe in his now trademark leather finery, a bullwhip slung nonchalantly over his left shoulder. Of chief interest here are the two other tracks. 'Beyond The Realms Of Death' (originally from Stained Class) was recorded live at Cleveland's Angora Ballroom in May 1978. It's a masterpiece of light and shade, serenity and menace, and Rob wrings every last ounce of emotion out of the lyrics: "This is my life, this is my life, I'll decide not you!" (On stage, this is the bit where Halford stabs maniacally at his eyes with the tips of his fingers. Don't try it at home, kids). Guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing, meanwhile, step up to the plate and contribute storming, borderline insane, solos. 'The Green Manalishi (With The Two-Pronged Crown)', Priest's bruising interpretation of the Fleetwood Mac original had by now become a firm favourite in their live repertoire, hence its inclusion here. Just listen to Halford wrap his tortured tonsils around the lyrics: "Can't believe that you need my love so bad/Come sneaking around, trying to drive me mad." He clearly relishes singing, make that snarling, those Peter Green-penned words."

"Check out the blurb on the cover of the original March 1980 release: "Limited edition three-track 12-inch single, only £1.15 RRP." Sheesh £1.15! If you're still living after midnight these days, well, hell that wouldn't even buy you the lettuce out of a kebab. Providing a taster for Priest's breakthrough British Steel album (which would reach No.4 in the UK and No.34 in the US), this single would peak at No.12 in Britain. Cast-iron proof that Priest's career had by now surged into overdrive, propelled in so small part by 'Living After Midnight's gutsy guitar riff, which somehow manages to be both juddering and jaunty at the same time. The song's binge-tastic, if somewhat tongue-in-cheek, lyrics embody the hard-partying lifestyle rock 'n' roll lifestyle: "I took the city 'bout one a.m., loaded, loaded!" .The two live tracks were both recorded in Japan: at the Nakano Sunplaza Hall and Kosei Nenkin Hall in Tokyo. Performances at those twin venues also supplied the songs for 1979's Unleashed In The East album."

"It's May 1980 and copies of Priest's British Steel album, released the previous month, are hurtling out of the record stores at an alarming rate. (British Steel peaked at No.4 in the UK; No.34 in the US.) The success of British Steel was undoubtedly boosted by the legendary video to 'Breaking The Law' (third track on the album), which depicted Priest robbing a bank armed not with guns, but with guitars. Remember the scene where Messrs Halford, Tipton and Downing climb through the cashier's window and raid the vault to pilfer not millions of pounds, but to steal a Gold Disc of British Steel?! (Precious metal, indeed.) Listening back to 'Breaking The Law' now, you're amazed to discover it's only two minutes 34 seconds long. Amazing also to find that the song's mantra lodges itself in your brain like a flying meat hook, exactly as it did more than 30 years ago. As Glenn Tipton recalled to Billboard: "We just broke into that riff one day and the song wrote itself. We wrote it in about an hour, I think. Rob just started singing, "Breaking the law, breaking the law" and before we knew it we had a classic Priest song." The pomp and ceremony of flip-side 'Metal Gods' provides the perfect foil to the lead track's unabashed commerciality. K.K. Downing told Billboard: "When we were recording that track we had loads and loads of fun trying to make it sound as metal as we can. We were shaking cutlery trays in front of the microphones to create the sound of metal marching feet." Later, Rob Halford was given the mantle or 'Metal God'. 'Breaking The Law' was the highest-charting single of Priest's career, reaching No.12 in the UK."

"Another single from British Steel, this one reached No.26 in the UK. 'United' is a song in a similar vein to 'Take On The World': deceptively simple, yet utterly unforgettable. The call-to-arms nature of the song's message is similar to 'Take On The World', too: "United, united, united we stand/United we never shall fall". In actual fact, the words were inspired by the unpopularity of the Conservative government in the UK at the beginning of the 1980s. As Rob Halford once explained: "There was a feeling of the vast population of the British public being united against a government we felt was uncaring. It was also a kind of kickback to the way we were being ignored by various elements of the press in our home country because the punk movement was dominating everything. We wanted to send a rallying call out to the metalheads, not only in the UK but everywhere". Commenting on the B-side, 'Grinder', Halford added: "Lyrically it's just me blowing up again about humanity and the way we still don't look out for each other"."

"In February 1981, less than a year after the release of British Steel, the increasingly prolific Priest released their Point Of Entry album. Having garnered plenty of airplay with the singles from British Steel, the band pursued a more radio-friendly direction on its successor. 'Don't Go' is characterised by its slow, thudding, groove not to mention Rob Halford's newly cultivated moustache on the accompanying video! 'Solar Angels' might be one of Priest's lesser-known tracks, perhaps because of its unusually cosmic lyrics - "Golden halos radiating higher/Diamond visions softly breathing fire" - but it's incredibly anthemic nevertheless."

"Released in April 1981, here we have what are arguably Priest's Top Three most commercial songs ever, collected in one pulse-pounding package. 'Hot Rockin', from Point Of Entry, is a deceptively simple rock'n'roll toon; the kind of chunky, naggingly memorable song that Priest were knocking out seemingly on a whim in the early 1980s. The video, if you remember, opens with the bare-chested members of the band exercising in a gym, while a sweaty Halford sings the opening line: "I've done my share of workin' out'" (Workin' out? Gym? See what they did there?). 'Breaking The Law' and 'Living After Midnight' were recorded live in February 1981. Frankly, we're not entirely sure where, but we'd guess they were recorded during the early stages of Priest's World Wide Blitz tour, which means it's either Holland, France or Germany. Sorry we can't be more specific."

"'You've Got Another Thing Coming' was originally on Priest's July 1982 album Screaming For Vengeance; the song was released as a single the following August. It reached No.67 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (with 'Diamonds And Rust' on the B-side instead of a live version of 'Exciter'), making it the Band's only charting song in the US. In the UK it got a place higher. With a gruffer sound than many of the songs on Point Of Entry, this is a classic Priest thudder with a take-no-shit theme: "Act tough, ain't room for second best". Listen for a stinging Tipton guitar solo after Halford sings the reflective lines: "In this world we're livin' in, we have our share of sorrow/Answer now is don't give in, aim for a new tomorrow". In May 2006, VH1 ranked 'You've Got Another Thing Coming' fifth on their list of the 40 Greatest Metal Songs (Believe it or not, Pat Boone covered the song on his 1997 album In A Metal Mood: No More Mr Nice Guy!)"

"Another track from Screaming For Vengeance, '(Take These) Chains' was released in October 1982 and was written by Bob Halligan Jr. The B-side is worth listening to for its curiosity value, being an eight-minute grab-bag of various Priest song clips: 'Sinner', 'Exciter', 'Beyond The Realms Of Death', 'Burnin' Up', 'Take On The World', 'Breaking The Law', 'United', 'Living After Midnight', 'Solar Angels', 'Hot Rockin', 'The Hellion', 'Electric Eye', 'You've Got Another Thing Coming' and '(Take These) Chains'. Phew! We're guessing this was a record company idea to promote the back catalogue. The A-side, meanwhile, begins gently and atmospherically before developing into a dramatic tale of a love lost but still lingering. Despite moving 3,000 miles away, a former lover's tentacles still reach out: "I tried to run but I'm tied to you like a slave/It's my fault loving you so give me some kind of life, leave me be". Great anguished vocal performance from Rob Halford."

"'Freewheel Burning' is the lead track and first single from Defenders Of The Faith, Priest's ninth studio album. Both single and album were released in January 1984. With thrash metal in the ascendancy, Priest were intent on reasserting their heavy metal credentials, and the sleeve of this 12-inch single depicted a creature called the Metallian, a ram-horned, tiger-like creation that was part creature, part tank. As the blurb on the back of the album (which also featured the Metallian on its cover) explained: "Rising from darkness where Hell hath no mercy and the screams for vengeance echo on forever. Only those who keep the faith shall escape the wrath of the Metallian, master of all metal". Here, Priest sound harder, faster and a helluva lot more furious. No wonder, then, that 'Freewheel Burning' is a near-perfect neck-snapper. 'Breaking The Law' was recorded at the US festival on May 29, 1983."

"This three-track 12-inch single is curious because it only contains one Priest original: 'Jawbreaker'. An immense live version of 'The Green Manalishi' was recorded at The Palladium, New York, in July 1981. The lead track, 'Some Heads Are Gonna Roll', was, like '(Take These) Chains', written by Bob Halligan, Jr. This is archetypal pounding Priest with a mean, loping rhythm, recalling the commerciality of the band's British Steel days. By contrast, 'Jawbreaker' is a short, sharp shock to the system: madder, mayhem-packed and more thrusting. Great lyrics, too: "Deadly as the viper peering from its coil/The poison there is coming to the boil". The musical equivalent of being chinned by Mike Tyson. Both tracks are from Defenders Of The Faith. And when Rob Halford barks the word "Jaw-BREAKERRRRRR!" there's no doubt that he isThe Metallian, The Master Of All Metal."

"After the all-out aggression of Defenders Of The Faith, Priest took a career sidestep into modernity and embraced the use of synthesised guitars on Turbo, their April 1986 album. 'Turbo Lover' was track one, side one of the record (in old money). According to Rob Halford: "It's a great driving song. It was written in regard to the twin turbos in Porsches". Bassist Ian Hill added: "Turbos were all the rage, the in-thing. K.K. [Downing] and Glenn [Tipton] had bought Porsche Turbos. I'd even bought a vacuum cleaner because it had the word turbo on it!"."

"Judas Priest's ultra-commercial phase reached its zenith with the release of this four-track 12-incher in May 1986. Both 'Locked In' and 'Reckless' were lifted from Turbo, but they are perhaps tougher-sounding offerings than you might remember. There's limited use of synthesised guitars on the former, while they don't appear to be utilised at all on the latter (apparently a left-over track from the Defenders Of The Faith sessions). Both have outstanding vocal performances from Rob Halford, and outstanding lyrical bursts: "You've got the key, the key to my he-aaaa-rt" and "I'm feelin' reckless, way out of hand, a real survivor comin' at gale force 10"."

"After the slick-sounding Turbo, Priest's Painkiller album, released in September 1990, marked the birth of a more ferocious, more feral approach. Guitarist K.K. Downing was once asked if the goal had been to produce Priest's heaviest album thus far. "Not initially", he replied, "but as the album started to grow we enjoyed the energy that we were creating. Now that we had [drummer] Scott Travis, we were sure going to see what he had in the tank". They reinforced their intensity for the Painkiller tour. When Priest went on the road they were clearly in a mood of no compromise, as this, the title track, proves. Sheer heavy metal delirium; there's no other way to describe it. No wonder copies of this 12-inch single were pressed up on blood-red vinyl. The choice of Priest classics for the other two songs 'United' and 'Better By You, Better Than Me' paid both tribute to the band's heritage, and showed how determined they were to continue to stretch the boundaries of metal. Overall, this single showed how far Priest had advanced, and how much further they still intended to go."

"The sleeve to this 12-inch single sums it up: a multi-fanged, skeleton-winged, Alien-type creature wrapped around the band's emblem. Here we have tolling bells and power chords. High-pitched screams of "I taste the fear!". And a tuneful, counterbalancing chorus: "In the night, come to me, you know I want your touch of evil". 'Between The Hammer And The Anvil', meanwhile, is characterised by its industrial-sounding midsection and some awe-inspiring guitar interplay between Tipton and Downing. "The thing about Painkiller [from which these two tracks were taken] was that it became a defining moment", Rob Halford once said. "We set ourselves a challenge to make the consummate heavy metal album, and that's exactly what we achieved". All this, plus a near eight-minute live version of 'You've Got Another Thing Coming' too. Colossal and then some."

"The 20th single of this box set also marks the end of an era. The final track to be taken from Painkiller, 'Night Crawler' an emblematic Priest pummeller was released in April 1993. Rob Halford had recently left the band, but like the song's lyrics say: "Beware the beast in black, you know he's coming back". And so he did. Halford returned to the Priest fold in July 2003, and another chapter of the band began and still continues."

As CBS 6915 was single with Take on the World , cant find info about CBS 6719 on the net.
Here the reviewer tells that Starbreaker was lifted from Sin after Sin, but here's a live version in Agora same as disc number 5.
In CD 11: HOT ROCKIN' when you put it in a PC the last song reads Steeler.
